Wednesday Interview: Jeff and Anne from “What Doesn’t Suck?” 2

This week in Wednesday Interview, Jeff and Anne, a half French, half American expat couple living and working in Dubai. They run “What Doesn’t Suck?”, a popular video travel blog highlighting life in Dubai as well as their travels around the world.

What type of traveller would you say you are?

We take every chance we have to travel while both working full-time jobs. While we don’t travel as much as we’d like, with Dubai being based in the middle of the globe our short trips and weekend getaways take us to places like Azerbaijan, Goa, Zanzibar and Sri Lanka so we can’t complain.

Do you remember the first trip you took together as a couple?

As a couple, the first trip we took was to Thailand for New Years – a trip we promised each other we’d make on our first date. We booked our tickets 3 weeks later.

What is the one thing that you always carry inside your backpack?

These days it has got to be a rechargeable USB battery. With all the video that we shoot on our iPhones, it is absolutely a must.

Would your travel solo without each other?

We are all about experiencing the world together. Solo travel is fantastic but we are at a point right now where we plot and plan exotic trips and getaways from Dubai and cannot wait to experience them together.

If you are able to travel to one place, where would you recommend?

We just got back from Zanzibar last week and cannot speak highly enough of the whole trip. We swam with wild dolphins, explored amazing Stone Town and even sipped champagne with a cheetah. The more exotic places in the world aren’t that far away if you just plan them right and make visiting them a priority.

What’s the worst place that you have stayed in for sleeping? What’s the best?

Haha, this is a great question. I stayed at a $2 a night hostel in Singapore a few years ago that would make a jail cell look like the Ritz. On the other hand, we love Radisson Blu hotels. While not the most expensive or luxurious we prefer them over the super fancy as they are always comfortable, affordable, beautiful and have all the things we expect when travelling.

Do you have any challenging and bad experience while travelling?

Our only problem while travelling is not having enough time – a problem that will never be solved, which we don’t take as a bad thing. There is a big world out there and we’ll just keep chipping away exploring.

If you were not travelling what would you be doing instead?

Every traveller, no matter how much they love the lifestyle, dreams of settling down one day and making a home. While we do work full time and live in Dubai, this isn’t our permanent home. What I’m trying to say I guess is that we dream of having a house and a dog. Yea, we just want a puppy.

Are you planning a new trip or do you already have a new trip in mind?

We are planning new trips every week. We just bought tickets last week to go to Beirut for a weekend next month and will be off to Iceland and France this summer before doing a road trip on the west coast of the US later in the year. We’re also planning weekend trips to Egypt and India over the summer.

Do you have any advice or tips for aspiring travellers?

Just. Do. It.

It really is that simple. Get on your computer, search for tickets and book that flight. You’ll never regret it, we promise.

I loved reading this interview: I follow ‘what doesn’t suck’ but interviews always shed a slightly different light on the authors! I am very jealous of being based in such a convenient place to travel – would love to have so many different places a short hop away!
